MEDITERRANEAN GARDENS

The meeting on Tuesday 11th June  was very well attended attracting forty three members. Our guest speaker this month was Caroline Davies, a Melbourne resident and the President of the of Mediterranean Garden Society. This is an international not for profit organisation, open to people who are interested in gardening in places with dry summers. Here is a link to their website: http://www.mediterraneangardensociety.org/about.html

Ms Davies gave an excellent illustrated talk about her experiences of gardens and environments in places with Mediterranean climates she has visited around the world. She also spoke of her own gardening in Melbourne with its dry hot summers.

The ikebana theme for the meeting: Mediterranean Gardens, led members to using plants from dryer places around the world or capturing a dry summer feeling with colour.

A demonstration was given by Toula Karanikolopoulos who used Agave as her principal material. Toula told us that the Agave is grown widely in Greece and is one of her favourite ikebana subjects.

Here is Toula's completed work in which she has used Agave, Bougainvillea and peeping from the back on the left side, Geranium.

Below are photos of other ikebana works made by members at the meeting.
